He still believes, after everything he's been through, he wants to redeem himself even for things that were beyond his control and he never blames others.
This absolutely breaks my heart about Sam. He takes responsibility for things that he shouldn't have to take the full blame for. Sure, he killed Lilith and started the apocalypse, but he was manipulated every step of the way, and the angels kept his brother from him when he needed Dean the most. Still, Sam takes the blame and takes it upon himself to fix it - I've seen arguments about the fact that he said yes to Lucifer even when Dean told him no, that he ignored Dean's wishes, but I just think he did what he had to do. It was incredibly brave.
